Electrotherapy IFC & TENS
The use of electrotherapy for medicinal purposes is an ancient practice beginning in the latter half of the 18th century. Today, electrotherapy treatments may be administered in various forms providing a non-invasive, comfortable treatment that is designed primarily to relieve muscle, joint & nerve pain and improve physical functioning.
Interferential Current Therapy (IFC) has become one of the most widely used electrotherapy modalities today. IFC uses medium frequency currents to produce a low frequency effect resulting in a deep, more comfortable and effective treatment. TENS units work on a similar frequency but are portable and easy to use at home to continue treatments and provide pain relief between your therapy sessions.
Electrotherapy units usually consist of a powered device connected by wires to adhesive electrode pads which are placed on the skin. Once the electrodes are attached and the unit is turned on, a mild electric current is sent to the skin via the electrode. Depending on the setting and the results that are indicated, patients may feel a tingling, crawling or rhythmic pulsating muscle contraction.

Electro-stimulation works directly to block the transmission of pain signals, improve circulation & nerve flow and promotes the release of endorphins and enkephalins, natural painkillers produced by the body. When you feel nerve pain, an electrical signal is sent from a damaged nerve to your brain. IFC & TENS stimulation works by sending out their own electrical impulses. These charges interrupt or blocks the pain signals, reducing the pain you feel. While electrotherapy may not cure the underlying cause of pain, it can provide a temporary decrease or cessation of pain and speed the healing process.

Electrotherapy is used in post-surgical treatment to stimulate blood flow and prevent dangerous blood clotting, and to promote bone and tissue growth for healing. It is effective and widely used in rehabilitative therapies for injury, stroke, osteoarthritis and multiple sclerosis for its effectiveness in preventing muscular atrophy, improving strength, range of motion and controlling spasm.
