Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of enhancing psychological and physical well being. These powerful and concentrated natural oils are extracted by steam distillation or expression from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant and then blended with a carrier oil for use with massage or dispelled via nebulizer for inhalation. During inhalation, the aroma from these essential oils are inhaled through the olfactory system to stimulate limbic brain function and trigger a therapeutic reaction. These oils can affect the body both psychologically and physiologically depending on which essential oil you use. For example, peppermint is known to energize the senses whereas lavender is known for it’s relaxing effect. When used topically as an additive to the massage oil during treatment, not only is the olfactory system stimulated but also the natural constituents of the essential oils are absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream to promote whole-body healing. As a form of alternative medicine, aromatherapy is gaining momentum. It is used for a variety of applications, including pain relief, mood enhancement, increased cognitive function, and the treatment or prevention of disease.
